SARDINE is pleased to present 'spirit rose a metre', a three person exhibition of new work by Melissa Dadourian, Sarah Heinemann, and Debra Pearlman. 'spirit rose a metre' opens with a reception on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 6 to 9 pm. It will run through Sunday, March 18, 2018.
This serious moonlight, hesitation, as days go by, tremble like a flower, blue, moment, let’s dance, captured, comfort, soft isolation, maybe, mark your time, inspiration, innocence, sometimes, texture, geometry from mars, mediation, spirit rose a metre, we will be kings.
Melissa Dadourian is a Brooklyn based artist working in textile media, painting and sculpture. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA in Combined Media and Painting from Hunter College. Dadourian has exhibited internationally and in New York. Recently Dadourian presented for her solo show 'Domestic Specimens' at Mushroom Project Space in Brooklyn NY. Her work was also included in 'Radius 50' curated by David A. Ross at Woodstock Artist Association & Museum in Woodstock NY. Residencies include Vermont Studio Center, The Textile Arts Center, and the American Academy in Rome. Dadourian reinterprets abstract painting with a feminine bend, which she refers to as “soft geometry”. The female condition and female empowerment is inspiration for all of Dadourian’s work.
Sarah Heinemann is a painter based in Brooklyn. Originally from Chicago, IL, Heinemann attended Smith College in Northampton, MA., and holds a BFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sarah's first large scale wall-based work titled 'Skagit' was on view at the Knockdown Center from 2016-17, inaguarating the institution's wall-based painting series. Her work was also recently included in the 2017 Whitney Houston Biennial: Great Love of All. She has shown with The RE:Institute, SARDINE, and Jason Rulnick Gallery in New York, Marwen Alumni Gallery and Open End Space in Chicago, as well as Mass MoCA’s 28 Holden Gallery in North Adams, MA. Sarah has worked for the studio of Sol LeWitt since 2000, realizing LeWitt wall drawings for museums, galleries, and private collections. In December 2017 she was comissioned by Warby Parker in partnership with the Estate of Stuart Davis to paint the murals 'Allee' and 'Outside' for their flagship store at Rockefeller Center.
Debra Pearlman is an artist based in Brooklyn. Her work is included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Walker Art Center, New York Public Library, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Museum Sztuki and Smith College Museum, among other institutions. She has been a recipient of residencies and grants from The Meredith S. Moody Residency at Yaddo, The Peter S. Reed Foundation and The Lower East Side Print Shop. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally including at SLAG Gallery, Anthony Philips, Sue Scott, Exit Art, The international Print Center, Delicatessenhaus, The Biennial in Lodz, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and The Chicago Renaissance Society, and has been reviewed in The New York Times, Time Out (critic’s choice), Art in America, and The Chicago Sun-Times (critic’s choice). Pearlman received an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts.
SARDINE is located on the ground floor of 286 Stanhope Street between Wyckoff and Irving Avenues in Bushwick, Brooklyn, one block from the Dekalb L train and near the Knickerbocker M.
