SARDINE is pleased to present Cosmic Spandex, a solo exhibition by Andy Cross. The show opens Saturday, September 10, with a reception that evening from 6-9 pm. The exhibition runs through Sunday, October 9, 2016. It represents Cross’ second solo show with the gallery, as well Sardine’s 5th anniversary as a venue in the vibrant Bushwick art scene.
For Cosmic Spandex, Cross has wrapped the gallery in a hand painted, 10 by 35 foot long, oil on canvas, painting of the cosmos. On top of this backdrop Cross will hang a ‘constellation of drawings’. The drawings are a survey of Cross’ diverse interests and travels, selected from his
library of personal sketch books, spanning over a decade of work. Each drawing is in a unique picture frame that holds the same timeless quality; in that they were hand crafted by Roger William Cross II, Andy’s late grandfather. It is a ‘cross-generational’ approach to collaboration and a way for Cross to honor his Grandfather as one of his earliest supporters and artistic influences. The fabric of space (literally represented in Cross’ canvas) bends all the rules of linear time. The same goes for this exhibition. Filtered through the artist’s imagination and heighten by Cross’ fine draftsmanship, are historical references from Ancient Mesopotamia, through the High Renaissance into a New Age present, creating a curious ‘cross section’ of human thought.
Andy Cross (b. 1979, Williamsburg, Virginia) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Cross received a MFA from Hunter College in 2005. His work has been exhibited in New York and Internationally. A larger installation titled “House Painter” received a solo show at the Max Mara, Maramotti Family Museum and Collection in Regio Emilia, Italy (2013). In New York and Brooklyn he has had 5 solo exhibitions with Martos (2013), Kravets Wehby (2006), Cathouse Funeral (2014), and Sardine (2014 / 2016). He has also had solo projects with Mario Diacono in Boston, Massachusetts (2005/2007).
SARDINE is located on the ground floor of 286 Stanhope Street between Wyckoff and Irving Avenues in Bushwick, Brooklyn, one block from the Dekalb L train and near the Knickerbocker M.
