Christopher Dunlap

123 / XYZ

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 9, 6 - 9 pm

Saturday, November 9 - Sunday, December 15, 2019

SARDINE is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Christopher Dunlap. 123 / XYZ opens with a reception on Saturday, November 9, from 6 to 9pm. It will run through Sunday, December 15, 2019.

The paintings in Christopher Dunlap’s second solo show at Sardine, 123 / XYZ, all begin with a grid. When starting a painting, Dunlap returns to two simple directions: vertical and horizontal. And within that grid, one deviation outside of the composed verticals and horizontals, can cause the canvas to spill open with possibility and multiplicity. This sense of opening up the canvas through the depiction of unfolding space creates the ability for the viewer to inhabit his paintings both visually and conceptually. A sense of intimacy, and familiarity is also achieved through Dunlap’s approach to both size and scale. His paintings reinforce the fact that he is making an object while at the same time depicting a pictorial space within the confines of a specific geometry. Each painting opens a world both imagined and created.

Christopher Dunlap was born in Pullman, Washington. He received his BFA from University of Washington and his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He has had recent solo shows at Hiromart Gallery, Tokyo, Japan in 2019 and Sardine Gallery in 2017. His work has also been exhibited in various group shows including Albada Jelgersma Gallery, Amsterdam, NL; Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; No Place Gallery, Columbus, OH; Site 131, Dallas, TX; Mckenzie Fine Art, NYC and Spring Break Art Fair, NYC. He has been reviewed in The New York Times, ArtFCity and Travel Magazine. Dunlap lives and works in Harlem, New York City.
