Tasting the Waters

NOVEMBER 14 - DECEMBER 13 2015

Sardine is very pleased to present Tasting the Waters by Veronika Pausova. The exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday, Nov. 14th, 6-9pm, and runs through December 13, 2015.

Tasting the Water brings together a selection of recent paintings by Veronika Pausova. In her world, it’s subtly dramatic things that occur in locations of exposure – while fishing and camping, in the bathroom - that are imbued with a subverted, personal monumentality. As if you shuffled the chapters of the novels by a favorite author, each work gives you just enough information to elicit a story, but it comes in parts and layers. The immediately relatable and boldly seductive use of figuration invites you in, though at second glance, it’s not as easy to unravel where that leads you. The odd crops, awkward shifts in perspective and multiple points of view question the notions of reflections and reality. Things could break, evaporate, slip out of your hands or float away. But the incomparably wonderful touch of these small, but incredibly significant moments could also lead to things opening up, breaking free, or returning to calm.

Veronika Pausova was born in Prague, Czech Republic and grew up in Montreal, Canada. She now lives and works in Toronto, Canada. She received her BFA from Glasgow School of Art in 2009 and her MFA in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013. She has shown with Era VI VII VI, 106 Green, and Lovely Town.
