RICH AND CULTIVATED

OCTOBER 12 - NOVEMBER 30 2012

SARDINE is pleased to announce RICH AND CULTIVATED, a group exhibition curated by Sanders Watson.  Participating artists include Todd Carignan, Michael Cline, Ed Flanagan, Jacob Goble, Jen Harris, Daina Higgins, Kurt Kauper, Matthew Mahler, Nathania Rubin, and Joel Stotts.  There will be two exhibitions over a period of two months with receptions on October 12th, 6 - 8 pm and November 9th, 6 - 8 pm.

Taking into consideration the process and practice of each participant, the work represents a departure from the ubiquitous pressures often placed on artists to develop continuity within their work.  Usually resulting in a personal and recognizable style connecting each piece, artists can be influenced by the market, institutional expectation, gallery preference, or collector biases.  Artists often maintain this specific way of working throughout their career with little diversion from this path.  The above can be summarized as the artists “audience”, which Clement Greenberg refers to in his often exhausted article Avant-Garde and Kitsch, as the “rich and cultivated”.  Begging us to ask “who do we make artwork for” we should consider the task carefully as its effects are often unavoidable and invisible to the conscious, ultimately interpreting the artists identity.
